Back-to-School Anxiety: Helping Your Child Transition from Summer to the Classroom

2 min read

A new teacher, a new classroom, sometimes a whole new school — it is completely normal for children to feel anxious in the weeks before school starts. For most kids, those butterflies fade within the first week or two. Some children need additional strategies to overcome those first week of school jitters.

Age-by-Age Strategies

  • Preschool and kindergarten: visit the school ahead of time, practice the morning routine, and keep goodbyes short, warm, and consistent. Lingering usually makes separation harder, not easier.

  • Elementary school: talk through the schedule, arrange a playdate with a classmate before the first day, and let your child pick out supplies to build a sense of ownership.

  • Middle school: acknowledge the social pressure is real. Walk the building if the school offers an open house, and practice locker combinations and schedules together.

  • High school: focus on sleep, workload balance, and keeping communication open — teens often show stress as irritability rather than worry.

The Night Before

Keep it boring in the best way: an early, screen-free wind-down, clothes and backpack laid out, and a simple script — “It's normal to feel nervous. You've done hard new things before, and you can do this too.” Validate the feeling without amplifying it.

When Anxiety Is More Than Nerves

Call us if your child's worry doesn't ease after the first few weeks, or if you see school refusal, frequent stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause, sleep disruption, or a child who seems withdrawn or panicked. Anxiety is one of the most common — and most treatable — conditions we see, and we screen for it at well visits.
