Spring break for Baltimore County Public Schools begins on March 30. Summer break is not too far away either. Many families will be traveling near and far, and we want to help you be ready.

International Travel

Traveling to another country can feel stressful, but these tips can help make the trip easier.

  • Car seats and boosters:  Even if another country does not require them, we strongly suggest using a car seat or booster. Most airlines let you bring your own for free. Rental car companies may also offer them for a fee.

  • Vaccines:  Check which vaccines your child needs for your travel destination. If your child is under 1 year old, we strongly suggest the MMR vaccine to help protect against measles.

  • Malaria protection:  If you are traveling to a country where malaria is common, your child’s primary care provider can prescribe medicine to help prevent it.

  • Sleep and jet lag:  Kids can get jet lag too. Do not plan too many activities on the first day. Let everyone rest and adjust. If your child needs a nap close to bedtime, keep it short so they can still sleep well at night.

Long Trips: Plane or Car

Long trips can be tiring for kids. Planning ahead can help.

If You Are Flying

  • Arrive early so you have plenty of time for security

  • Bring strollers or wagons to use in the airport and gate-check them

  • Talk to school-aged kids about what to expect at the airport

  • If you have an FAA-approved car seat and bought your child a seat, bring it on the plane

  • Pack lots of toys, books, games, and snacks

  • Help with ear pain during takeoff and landing by nursing, using a bottle, chewing gum, or drinking with a straw

  • Bring hand sanitizer and wipes to clean hands and surfaces

If You Are Driving

  • Take breaks often for snacks, bathroom stops, and movement

  • Keep food, snacks, and water in the car

  • Never leave children alone in the car, even for a short time

  • Bring toys, books, and games to help keep kids busy

Whether you are traveling or staying home during spring and summer break, we hope your family has fun and stays safe.
